Unequal loss protection and multiple description coding: a performance comparison

چکیده
In this paper we present a performance comparison between multiple description coding and unequal loss protection as tools to encode a layered source. We address a rate-distortion-based multiple description coding scheme and a stateof-the-art unequal loss protection algorithm based on Reed Solomon FEC codes. The comparison is performed using as a case study JPEG 2000 coded images transmitted over lossy packet networks. Complexity aspects are also considered. The simulation results show that both schemes allocate the same amount of redundancy for any given encoding output rate to protect the transmitted information. Whereas MDC, besides being computationally less intensive, achieves a smoother performance degradation, the ULP scheme yields superior performance in terms of the expected PSNR.

Generalized Multiple Description Coding Through Unequal Loss Protection
We use unequal amounts of explicit channel coding for generalized multiple description coding. Our solution can use any progressive source coder and it disperses information equally among the descriptions. Image quality improves gradually with the number of received descriptions. Our approach surpasses previously published results by a signiicant margin.
متن کاملA Method to Reduce Effects of Packet Loss in Video Streaming Using Multiple Description Coding
Multiple description (MD) coding has evolved as a promising technique for promoting error resiliency of multimedia system in real-time application programs over error-prone communicational channels. Although multiple description lattice vector quantization (MDCLVQ) is an efficient method for transmitting reliable data in the context of potential error channels, this method doesn’t consider disc...
متن کاملProtection of Regions of Interest against Data Loss in a Generalized Multiple Description Framework
We present a simple and ef£cient scheme for protecting a region of interest (ROI) in an image sent across lossy communication networks. To increase the probability that the ROI is received with high quality, we extend the unequal loss protection framework of MD-SPIHT [1] by adding more redundancy to the ROI than to other parts of the image. The ROI is therefore heavily protected at the expense ...
متن کاملSystematic Lossy Error Protection versus Layered Coding with Unequal Error Protection
In this paper we compare two schemes for error-resilient video transmission, viz., systematic lossy error protection, and scalable coding with unequal error protection. In the first scheme, the systematic portion consists of the compressed video signal transmitted without channel coding. For error-resilience, an additional bitstream generated by Wyner-Ziv encoding of the video signal is transmi...
